“National Fossil Day at the Alabama Museum of Natural History is the largest event in Alabama where people with an interest in fossils get together,” said Dr. Adiel Klompmaker, Curator of Paleontology. “Families, students, avocational (hobby) paleontologists, and professional paleontologists will be coming to learn more about fossils and share their passion.” The two paleontological societies in Alabama, the Birmingham Paleontological Society and the Alabama Paleontology Society, will also be present.
There is something to see and do for everyone! Several activities will be available for kids, tables with a variety of fossils will be showcased, and various special events are scheduled. These events include a keynote talk about mosasaurs, the presentation of an award to an avocational paleontologist, and the unveiling of a new 6 x 2.5 ft mosasaur exhibit. Nobody has to go home empty handed: choose your free fossil at the Department of Museum Research and Collections table.
“We are excited to welcome the community to our annual Fossil Day celebration,” said Joyia Davis, Education Outreach Coordinator. “We look forward to sharing the importance of fossils along with engaging activities for families to enjoy.”
This will be an afternoon full of activities not to be missed! This event is co-organized by the Alabama Museum of Natural History and The University of Alabama Museums’ Department of Museum Research and Collections.
